The Catholic Wisdom — Christ Is Alive — And He’s Talking to You

What Is Christus Vivit?

Christus Vivit (“Christ Is Alive”) is a post-synodal apostolic exhortation issued by Pope Francis on March 25, 2019, the Feast of the Annunciation. At 298 paragraphs, it emerged from the 2018 Synod on Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment. What makes it different: Francis addresses it directly to young people themselves, not to the adults who minister to them. It covers youth vocation, the call to holiness in young adulthood, discernment in an age of anxiety, and the Church’s responsibility to take young people seriously rather than patronize them.

Why It Matters for Dating and Marriage

The young adults we work with are carrying real pressure around the question of their lives: Who am I supposed to be? What am I supposed to do? Did I already miss something? Francis speaks to exactly that weight. His argument is that vocation is not primarily a career path or even a state of life — it’s the unfolding of a person into who God created them to be. For someone navigating dating, that reframes everything. You’re not just looking for a compatible partner. You’re discerning a shared vocation.

One Teaching We Use Every Day

“He is alive, and he wants you to be alive!” — CV §1. That single sentence does more pastoral work than a dozen careful arguments. The created dignity of a young person isn’t a premise to establish. It’s a reality to be received. When someone who has been ground down by Instagram comparisons or a string of failed relationships hears that Christ is alive and personally interested in their aliveness, it cuts through the noise in a way that careful theology sometimes doesn’t.

How We Apply It

In True Love (Young Adults 20-39): We use CV’s discernment framework to help young adults distinguish between anxiety-driven decision-making and genuine vocation. The redeemed clarity that comes when you stop managing fear and start listening.

In Before Forever (High School 14-19): CV appears in both Module 1 (“It’s Not Just You”) and Module 8. Francis’s direct address to teenagers — not about them, but to them — models exactly the tone Before Forever aims to hold.

FAQ

Q: Is Christus Vivit only relevant for teenagers? A: Francis addresses the document to young people broadly, and the sections on discernment, accompaniment, and the call to holiness are just as applicable to someone in their late twenties navigating a major life decision as to a seventeen-year-old.

Q: How does Christus Vivit connect to dating specifically? A: The vocation framework Francis builds — becoming who you are in Christ rather than performing an identity — is directly relevant to how we coach people to show up in dating relationships. Authenticity in love requires knowing who you actually are.
